Review: Cloaked

Cloaked Cloaked by Laura Greenwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this short read. I say 'short read', because it reads like a novella. I started read it this morning, and was able to finish this story in only a few hours time. That being said, I found it enjoyable, though it ends with a rather large cliffhanger.

This story is a bit different than the first two books I've read in the Beyond the Curse series. The others were basically retellings of classic fairy tale stories, but this book tells the story of what happens to both Hansel and Gretel far after their bread crumb affiliated fairy tale came to an ending. In this book, you learn that the two have come into their own many years later (the retelling of this story is made apparent by Gretel sharing a recap of the story), and have since befriended a vampire couple.

The story gets interesting when we learn that women are disappearing, and Hansel, Gretel, Keira and Phillip work together to try to discover how it's happening and why. I told you before this book ends with a rather massive cliffhanger, but I'm hoping to find another book by Laura Greenwood that will help clear up how this story really ends. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys paranormal romances, fantasy books with quite a bit of adventure, or fairy tale retellings.

Review: Guarding Eden

Guarding Eden Guarding Eden by Cameo Renae
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a YA Paranormal Romance and Fantasy book that focuses primarily on Eden East, her best friends, and the new kid at school...Alex. There are lots of mysterious facts revealed in this book, as well as a few adventurous, somewhat frightening and even uplifting moments included. If you are a fan of Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and YA literature, you should definitely check out this book. It's well thought out and easy to immerse yourself into the setting of this private boarding school along with this great cast of characters.

Review: Saven: The Complete Series

Saven: The Complete Series Saven: The Complete Series by Siobhan Davis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this series! I was on the edge of my seat through every book of this series. The first book was so captivating, I expected this series to head downhill fast...oh, how wrong I was! This book series is ideal for fans of YA/NA and sci-fi combined with full on fantasy reads...and would probably even appeal to individuals that feel that the sci-fi genre just isn't for them. I rank this entire series so close to five stars all around, you might as well round the full count up (note...I did give one book just under the complete 5 star ratings due to the lack of outright pizzazz when compared to the others...see below). I'm enclosing my individual reviews of each book below, just to give you a peek into each book in the series.

Book #1: Saven Deception

This is the second series I've started by Siobhan Davis (The Kennedy Boys was my first). I'm totally hooked! A great cast of characters have been developed and there is a slight hint of mystery to this story, as you're not sure who's the 'good', 'bad' or neither until it's near the book's end.

This series is ideal for readers that love sci-fi, or even for those that aren't huge sci-fi/space opera fans. It's a YA friendly novel that will grab onto you and leave you wanting to continue the series! I received a copy of this book for free but wanted to share my honest opinion about it here.

Book #2: Saven Disclosure

After reading the first book, I was so excited to get started on book 2. There is so much that happens in this book, and if you started with Saven Deception, then your appetite has most likely been set in place to read more about Sadie & Logan and their adventure that could lead to either discovering universal unity or enduring grand destruction. I am totally hooked, and can't wait to read book 3...I definitely need more...NOW!

I would recommend this book (and series) to fans of sci-fi and/or those that enjoy coming of age type stories. I promise, this whole series is like an improved take on the concept presented in 'The Host' by Stephenie Meyer...sci-fi writing style that should appeal to those that aren't already fans of the genre. I am currently reading the boxset of the Saven series as an advanced readers ecopy that I received on my kindle fire, but I wanted to voluntarily share my honest opinion about this book here.

Book #3: Saven Denial

OMG! This was only a novella stuck in the middle of this series? There is seriously so much going on in this book...I didn't even realize it was intended to be a short inclusion in this set until it was over and I saw 'novella' written on the title page.

Sadie endures being kidnapped (again), finding out she's fallen in love (again), discovers she has previously hidden powers (not 'again'...but how cool is that? And didn't part of her realize this last one all along?). My mind is still reeling from the excitement of reading this little novella...and it's been an absolutely mind blowing experience. This book includes time-travel on several accounts...but the ways in which it was used will seriously blow your mind.

To be honest...I've been so glued to this series...I ran my battery in my kindle fire out completely...time to recharge so I can find out what happens next *bites nails*

Book #4: Saven Defiance

I give this book a ranking of about 4.75 stars

I'll admit there were a few moments that didn't grip me like the previous novels in this series (thus the partial star rating). That being said...this book contained many thrilling experiences, some fast paced and some outright frightening. Sadie loses a friend...gets mixed up in a slightly messed up love triangle...discovers an unrealized family bond...and on and on and on.

This book delivered all the twists and turns I've come to expect from books in the Saven series by Siobhan Davis, and I've been reading and even re-reading some of the more exciting moments, just to make sure I don't miss a thing! I would highly recommend this series to any reader that is a fan of fantasy tales and sci-fi stories...and even to those that aren't sure if they like sci-fi writing in general. It is a coming of age style tale set in the far future that will totally blow your mind.

I received a copy of the Saven boxed set and fell in love with it from the start...I felt I had to share my honest opinion about this amazing story here. I highly recommend you check it out.

Book #5: Saven Deliverance

I agree with a few of the other reviewers here...because this story might have felt just a little rushed, and didn't contain the same huge epiphanies that I fell in love with from all of the previous books...I decided to rank this book 4.5 stars. I received a free ecopy of the boxed set this book is included in, but I wanted to share my honest opinion of this book here.

That being said, out of all the books, despite the aliens on every page, space travel, futuristic elements, etc etc...I felt Saven Deliverance felt like it contained many more sci-fi specific elements than any of the other books in this set. It was an enjoyable read, and I really enjoyed the ride as I breezed through the whole series (with the exception of a few novellas I haven't gotten around to just yet) in a matter of days...it's truly addictive. I don't really consider myself to be a huge fan of the space opera/sci-fi styles of books, but this one just reached out and grabbed me from the first chapter on!

I would recommend this book to fans of sci-fi and fantasy novels or coming of age style books that have already read the main novels in this series beforehand. It contains a few swerves here and there (not quite the twists and turns thrown at you from previous novels), and the story is able to wind down with all around happy endings.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This series is quickly becoming another of my favorite YA school based fantasy set. In this book, Lucy ends up with a mysterious bond to one of the last people she would have expected to have to keep constant tabs on. I highly recommend this series to anyone that a fan of the Hogwarts or Vampire Academy books, especially those that love reading about werewolves.

Review: Long Shadows

Long Shadows Long Shadows by Cecilia Dominic
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed reading this book. This story combines elements of both lycanthropy and eventual magical elements to make it a wonderfully cultured read. There are many surprises throughout this novel that makes it a real page turner until the very last page. If you enjoy stories about werewolves and similar paranormal creatures, I'd advise you to give this book a try. This book is actually the second in a series, but can still be read as a standalone for the most part since it focuses on a new character from the first edition.

Review: Impact

Impact Impact by Autumn Sand
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book in advance and wanted to voluntarily share my honest opinion about it here.

I enjoyed this book, and my heart really went out to Manny while he told a flashback to the events that had happened in his past that brought him to where he is in the present day. Zoe has really been through just about as much, minus a few darker elements, but with a sister ready to torch all that is meant to be. This book features a dark tale that starts off with drugs and manipulation that leads Manuel Leon down the path that makes him the strong man he is today.

There are several sexual scenes that get pretty intense, so please keep that in mind before you decide to pick up any book from this series.

I really enjoyed this fairy-tale retelling...it's a bit dark, a bit frightening at times...and an interesting new way to think about the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. Fans of fantasy and fairy-tale revamps should love this book and the Beyond the Curse series.

Review: On Borrowed Luck

On Borrowed Luck On Borrowed Luck by TJ Muir
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was luck enough to gain access to an advance reader’s copy of this book, and I really enjoyed it. It’s basically a book that lays out a boys entire life, from his starting point being mothered and performing light thievery from an early age so he and his mother can survive, all the while remaining on the run from bullies that harass him around town, to happening across new circumstances that bring a bit of confusion and plenty of unexpected experiences his way. This book is an ideal read for those that enjoy reading about new lands and coming of age style novels.

Review: Dracones Rogue

Dracones Rogue Dracones Rogue by Sheri-Lynn Marean
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed reading this novel. It includes a well developed cast of characters with their own levels of strong and weak points, and this book is basically a second chance love story. When Raven, the avenging angel, and Soroyan, the werewolf that should have been born into royalty, meet and discover that they both had lost the great loves of their lives...they rediscover love for one another on a whole new level.

This is a fantasy book that involves an array of shifters and fantastic creatures just trying to make sense of it all. It does involve quite a few steamy sexual acts, so it's probably only ideal for readers over 17 that are comfortable reading books that contain several intense lust filled scenes.

I loved the fact I got to learn more about Soroyan in this book (elements about his past have always been so elusive in the other Dracones novels), and I totally fell for Raven and her willingness to be tough when she needs to be, but then also showing she has the strength to soften up when she feels more comfortable and at ease. I read an advanced copy of this book, but wanted to share my honest opinion about it here.

I really enjoyed reading this boxed set. This story focuses on a group of teenagers that are studying at a school far from home...but since several of them have family issues (and some more issues than that) going on in their personal lives...it makes sense for them. Several previously unknown factors make appearances in all of these books, and I enjoyed reading more about the characters involved. The Highlander’s Challenge (Lairds of Dunkeld Series) The Highlander’s Challenge (Lairds of Dunkeld Series) by Emilia Ferguson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A softly compelling historical romance

I enjoyed reading this book. Alina & Duncan both feel undeniably drawn to each other when found anywhere near each other, and both are in high hopes of a happy ending joining them together soon. A combination of dangerous circumstances for both parties seems like it may take one or the other out of the equation, but can true love prevail though it all?

With romantic thoughts and dreams captured throughout the novel, even while managing to scout out Uncle Brien's long lost love, this book ranks high on the soft romance scale. If you or a fan of historical romance novels (minus the erotic edges many contain), then look no further.

Pure Dark Vol 2: The Ultimate Horror Endurance Sequel Pure Dark Vol 2: The Ultimate Horror Endurance Sequel by Andrew Mackay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gross. Just...gross.

Keep in mind that if you're considering purchasing this book, then you might have already made it through the first book in this series (Pure Dark vol. 1). If that is the case...then I think your stomach might be able to stand up to this one without an issue. However, if you just happened across this book while browsing, be prepared to enter a twisted world where absolutely nothing is off the table. You have been warned.

Some of the stories are both horrific and at least a tad amusing, and others are just disturbingly gross from beginning to end. I'll admit this book didn't make me physically sick as much as the first edition, but it's definitely filled with it's fair share of horrific details displayed under a microscope. That being said, it's still a definite must-read if you want to keep tabs on the progress (or hindrance?) of the drug-riddled brain providing this entertainment. I read this after receiving a free ecopy, but the opinions shared here are all my own.

Review: The Mountain's Shadow

The Mountain's Shadow The Mountain's Shadow by Cecilia Dominic
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book! There are exciting moments, then just when the writing seemed to follow a pattern we're all used to as paranormal readers...it makes a sharp turn and displays a new unexpected twist! This book will keep you guessing as the story progresses.

Dr J. inherits a manor from her grandfather after his death, and apparently discovers a world of trouble when she moves in. Her devotion to the study of CLS (Chronic Lycanthropy Syndrome) leads her into some interesting discoveries...and also drags her down some dangerous paths along the way. When children start disappearing from the community, suspicions rise, and the story develops more layers. This book contains a bit plenty of mystery, excitement and new methods of communication.

I am definitely not one to spoil a good story, so I won't do that here. I'll just say that if you are a fan of werewolves, this book will definitely hold your attention. There are plenty of steamy visions here and there...but no full on eroticism, which is an aspect I love about Cecilia Dominic. She can write books that share just enough to wet our appetites as readers, but not overshare and give the whole goose away, so to speak. That being said, I did receive a copy of this book from the author, but I wanted to share my honest opinion about this novel here voluntarily. Thanks for reading my take on this great book (can't wait for the The Lycanthropy Files #2).

Dark Dreams and Dead Things Dark Dreams and Dead Things by Martina McAtee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! This is such an amazing book! I bought my copy a while back...and just put off reading it until now. It's taken me 3 nights of nearly steady reading to make it through this book. There is a lot going on, and new developments with all of the character you may remember from book 1 in the Dead Things series, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things.

Mace & Ember...their connection just can't be broken (or can it?). Isa can definitely kick butt (and Wren likes to watch)...Tristan has her own dilemma, and expect big news from Kai and Rhys before it's all said and done. This book is a real page turner from start to finish! I can't wait until the next book is released in this series!

Review: The Irish Getaway

The Irish Getaway The Irish Getaway by Siobhan Davis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a fun ride this novella was. I have fallen for the Kennedy clan, and taking this trip to the country of Ireland where Faye grew up was fun. The Kennedy boys definitely cut loose and get a little wild in this story, and it's heartwarming to see how close Ky and Faye have gotten at this point in the series. There are all kinds of shenanigans the Kennedy boys just seem to 'fall' into in this book...it makes for a quite the adventure.

I enjoyed getting peeks into the family members she met for the first time in this book, and seeing her interactions with them. If you've read previous books in The Kennedy Boys series, you'll love adding this book to your library. I'm sharing my honest review here voluntarily, though I managed to acquire a free copy of this book before it's release date.
